Why would my ex girlfriend just want to be friends.....?

Being friends doesn't REQUIRE talking, asking questions, etc. It only requires the knowledge that IF one of you ever wants to talk, the other will listen, without any obligation that either WILL ever have to talk (although the exchange of Christmas cards is always nice). She just doesn't want any future chance encounters to be awkward. Don't read so much into things.
