How can I get this bird to bathe/clean himself?
I rescued a hurt wild dove about 4 days ago. He's doing great. Eating, drinking, pooping, perching. But he can't fly at all. The most he can do is flap his wings to get up to his perch which is only about 3 inches from the ground. He can also walk and run. But he's getting a buildup of poop and stuff near his vent and it's starting to concern me. Its all turd-like and moist. His feathers are also super ruffled. I'm assuming the reason he can't fly is because of the balance of his feathers. When he runs too fast, he falls over and his right wing. It's probably because he has a lot of bald spots because I believe he was attacked by an animal. But what concerns me most is that I have NEVER seen him clean/preen his feathers. He never touches them or anything. All he does is sit on his perch all day, and walk around a bit when he's bored. If I put a larger dish of water, will he bathe in it? He also smells quite bad from all the poop on him. How can I get him to clean himself? He's very dirty... Also, he HATES water. When I first found him he had some blood from some scratches, and I went to put him in a shallow dish of water and he freaked out and hated it.
