Is the book requiem for a dream too obscene for a teen?

is the book requiem for a dream too obscene for a teen? I'm 18, but is the language and content okay for an 18 year old to read? I've read a little bit but I'm a little shocked at the stuff this guy says.. donno if i should keep reading or not.
